The Most Famous Summer Cocktails Recipes

Summertime… and the living is easy! Everyone’s favorite season is in full swing, where (hopefully) the most difficult daily decision one has to make is between that tasty daiquiri or a minty mojito. We’re firm on the notion that variety truly is the spice of life, so we’ve put together a short roundup of the best summer cocktails that you can make with our premium rums. Are you in?

 

  • Piña Colada

A very big yes to piña coladas; a tentative no to being caught in any rain. No cocktail begs for blazing heat and sunny skies quite like a piña colada. This classic rum and pineapple mix is loved all over the world, boasting a slush-like texture amidst a milky body.

The original piña colada receta dates back to 1954, where this cocktail is documented as having been created in San Juan, Puerto Rico. The classic recipe has remained pretty consistent over the decades, likely because piña colada ingredients are so simple, yet so satisfying.

Here’s the only piña colada recipe you’ll need this summer:

 

  • 50ml of Diplomático Planas
  • 120ml pineapple juice
  • 40ml coconut milk
  • 1tsp lime juice
  • 15 ice cubes

Add all of the ingredients into a blender and blitz until smooth. Pour into a tall glass and garnish with fresh pineapple. Then feet up, and enjoy!

 

  • Mojito

Now if only there were a cocktail that could instantaneously transport you somewhere where waves are crashing onto sand, and hot, salty days bleed into never ending summer nights…

Allow us to introduce: el mojito.

The mojito is one of the most widely enjoyed cocktails on the planet. Originating in Cuba, a well-made mojito is all about freshness and balance. In a classic environment it’s made with a quality light rum that won’t overpower the flavor of the key ingredient: mint. That being said, this is a versatile cocktail that works easily with both light and dark rum options as preferred. You’ll need:

 

  • 50ml of Diplomático Planas
  • 5ml lime juice
  • 5ml sugar syrup
  • 25ml soda water
  • 4 to 6 fresh mint leaves

Set the mint in the bottom of a tall glass, and mash it with a muddler (or the back of a knife). Add the rest of the ingredients, charging with soda and crushed ice last. And voilà — a classic mint mojito!

 

  • Daiquiri

The daiquiri frolics amongst the most popular of all rum cocktails, and is the epitome of simplicity. It’s a close relative of the Canchanchara, a Cuban blend involving rum, honey and water that saw great popularity throughout the 19th century.

The creation of the daiquiri itself is all thanks to an American man named Jennings Stockton Cox, who is believed to have invented the mix at the turn of the 20th century. Taken back to its roots, the rum daiquiri is one of those easy summer cocktails that pairs beautifully with a seafood or vegetable main.

To make a daiquiri at home you’ll need:

 

Shake all of the listed ingredients together with some ice and serve in a previously chilled glass. No colors, no additives, just simple elegance. ¡Salud!

 

  • Rum Punch

We don’t know about you, but after the aforementioned cocktail trio our palates are about ready for something a tad spicier. Enter rum punch, a cocktail with uncertain origins thanks to complex early trade routs and inadequate documentation.

All classic rum punch recipes have very specific flavor components in common: the spirit, a citrus, water, sweetener and some kind of spice (usually from a good dark rum). This cocktail is the embodiment of colorful summer drinks, offering layers of both dark and light rum in one.

The rum punch recipe we love most involves:

Add the rums, juices and grenadine into a shaker with ice cubes, and then shake well. Strain into a tall glass containing fresh ice cubes and garnish with cherries. Take it slow with this one, it’s double trouble in a glass!

 

  • Floridita

A moment of history, if we may? Between 1939 and 1960, esteemed author Ernest Hemingway made Cuba his home away from home. He would frequent a bar in Havana Vieja called ‘The Floridita’. Here, he would prompt the barman to make his preferred variation of the classic daiquiri cocktail

To Hemingway’s delight this recipe caught on, and locals began referring to it as a ‘floridita’, after the name of the bar itself.

It’s dry, it’s sour, and it’s refreshing as hell! It’s one of those summer cocktail recipes that are easy enough to enjoy year round. To make the famed floridita from the comfort of your own home, you’ll need:

  • 45ml of Diplomático Planas
  • 20ml lime juice
  • 7ml white grapefruit
  • 7ml maraschino cherry
  • Crushed ice and lime wedge

Shake all of the ingredients together and serve in a chilled cocktail glass. Garnish like you mean business — make Hemingway proud!
